LYNNE SAUNDERS FINE ART STUDIO
SCULPTURE

Lynne specializes in portrait sculpture, modelling the human form with clay. By using a combination of photographs and models, she captures, not only the physical resemblance of the person, but also the personality and character! To achieve this goal, she often includes personal accessories of the individual. See examples of this in Turban Lady, Garden Goddess and Marvin. After the form is completed in clay, it is then either hollowed out and fired, or a mold is made if the piece is to be cast in bronze. A fired piece is then set on an appropriate base and a patina (color) is applied. The final step in the bronze casting process is also the application of the patina. Today, an amazing variety of color and effects can be applied to bronze!

Some of the pieces shown below are for sale, while others are shown as examples, as Lynne welcomes commissions in both fired clay and bronze. To see sculptures, scroll down.. Mona Again! , bronze, is mounted on a hand-crafted walnut base. It is a 3-dimensional interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's, Mona Lisa. Transforming the multi-layering of the drapery from a 2-dimensional photograph into a 3-dimensional clay form was particularly challenging and intricate! Jim, detail of head, click to see larger view Jim (36" high) was done entirely from a model, but then a disaster ensued during transport, and it had to be re-done from memory and the aid of photos! The Transformation of Medusa is made of fired clay. It was done with a volunteer model that did not have interesting sculptural features and so she was transformed into a goddess.
Marvin, left, and Steve, right, are two ceramic portraits that capture their essence and personalities. Steve never stopped joking throughout the modelling process! Marvin, click to see larger view Steve, click to see larger view
