WATERCOLOUR PAINTING

As in the other media that Lynne Saunders works with, her mastery of watercolour painting is evident in the fresh, directness that her paintings exude! .. Working in several themes, her watercolour paintings display the clean lines of contemporary abstraction, and yet, the original sources of imagery are not lost, but given mood and atmosphere, with her careful attention to colour, contrast and design.

Pond Triptych , the most recent painting in the pond series, was inspired by the fantastic sculptural shapes, light, reflections, and shadows cast by the tangle of swamp lilies floating carelessly in a coastal lake. It was a challenge to capture the delicacy of both the water and lilies, while creating strong abstract forms at the same time.

Each panel is individually framed with a double-white matte and a brushed, german silver-coloured metal frame. The edges of the mattes where the 3 panels butt together are narrower, so that the panels hang close together and form a cohesive unit.

Dimensions of each panel (sans frame): 29" x 41". Framed height: 37". Total framed width: 11' 5".

The Pond No. 2, click for larger view The artist's main interest in The Pond No. 2 was not just the subject itself, but in the marvelous abstract forms of the lilies, and in creating an atmospheric painting with colour and composition.

The quiet serenity of a lazy summers day is the mood conveyed by the sea and rock paintings (above) that were inspired by the amazing stone formations discovered on a nearby island.

Each one is double-matted and custom framed with a contemporary, brushed oak frame.

Rushing to the Sea, Princess Louisa Inlet

These paintings were inspired by a boat trip up to Princess Louisa Inlet, described to me by an Hawaiian as, "the most beautiful place in the world!" It is a fiord on the west coast of British Columbia, where waterfalls tumble from thousands of feet above, through the forest into the sea. My goal was to capture the mystical quality of that place as I saw it trekking upwards through the trees.

Fantasy (Crow Series), click on image to see larger view
Fantasy (Crow Series) was an experimental painting based on a collage of my own photos combined with imagination, put together to create a fantasy landscape. The painting wasn't entirely pre-planned; it evolved and the crows were added at the last to provide a focal point.

Seafancy, (Crow Series) (right) was also an experimental painting in the same series as 'Fantasy' (above). The painting on the left was one of 2 colour sketches created to help sort out the composition.

Blue Poppies, click on image for larger view Blue Poppies was entirely unplanned and done outdoors on location. I loved the forms of the wild poppies, but not their orange colour, so I painted them blue! It is framed with a double-white matte, and a soft-gold coloured metal frame.
